The major reason people begin drinking, or using any type of drug, is because they want to feel "better" in some way. Maybe they want to feel more relaxed, more social, more mature, cooler, and more independent; the list goes on and on. Such "desired" feelings are often ones suggested by media advertising, or peer attitudes surrounding that product's use. But whatever the feeling was that you were seeking in the beginning, it was more accurately a reflection of your desire to mentally suppress or escape from the real life sensations that you were having. That's why we start. And we continue using either for the same reason, or because discontinuing use of the substance creates a new type of pain that we want to avoid (withdrawal).More on addiction CLICK HERE

To a newcomer, walking into an AA meeting can sometimes seem like entering a foreign country with its own language. Strange quotes, acronyms, and catch-phrases are casually thrown about in normal conversation. To someone who has never heard them before, it's often very hard to follow along. It seems that what is needed is an AA to English dictionary for those just beginning in the program. This page is the start of one attempt at such a dictionary.

Nevertheless, that quote sounds like good advice. So let's really, honestly, investigate Alcoholics Anonymous, without rejecting criticism of A.A. before investigation of all of the facts...More onAlcoholics Anoymous.

Try your birth date, the date you last had sex, your wedding date, the date you graduated. The day you worked the 1 step program by just not drinking. The date you stopped going to AA. Use your imagination. Have fun.
William Griffith Wilson (November 26, 1895 – January 24, 1971), also known as Bill Wilson or Bill W., was the co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), a fellowship of support groups dedicated to helping alcoholics achieve sobriety. According to the AA Twelfth tradition of anonymity, Wilson was and still is commonly known as "Bill W." or just "Bill." He largely preferred this form of his name over the more formal non-AA version, thus this article will use that form.
This article exposes the secret techniques cults will use to try and trick and control you. Cult leaders will not want you to read this, but read it anyway. Once you understand How Cults Work you will be better able to spot and avoid cult recruiters, and protect your family and friends.
The Church of Reality is based on the practice of Realism, which means believing in everything that is real. We think about thinking. We wonder about wondering. We try to understand the understanding of understanding. We are Explorers, not followers. The phrase "What is Real?" is our Sacred Question and the word "Reality" is our Sacred Message. We talk about reality, think about reality, and aim to make reality more important in society.
The Church of Reality is a religion that is based on reality rather than mythology. We answer the great questions that other religions address, like what is right and wrong, how do people live together in a community, and what are our responsibilities to ourselves and to each other. We address these concerns in the context of our evolutionary history, our present reality, and our future evolution. We are particularly focused on the future.
Does your group say it is the only true spiritual or secular path to recovery? Do you spend many nights at meetings. Do you fear being rebuked, shunned or ignored for expressing a different opinion? You are probably in a cult.
"Destructive cult" is a term used to refer to religions and other groups which have caused harm to their own members or to others. Some researchers define "harm" in this case with a narrow focus, specifically groups which have deliberately physically injured or killed other individuals, while others define the term more broadly and include emotional abuse among the types of harm inflicted. Use of the term has been criticized by some researchers, who assert that it is used to discredit the groups it is applied to, and unfairly compare them with historically more harmful groups and movements. Authors have also compared destructive cults with terrorism and have used the term to characterize Osama bin Ladin as a destructive cult leader.
